Since the venerable Hotel California underwent renovation several years ago there has been a plethora of new shops, galleries and restaurant openings in once sleepy Todos Santos. Two more retail office plazas are under construction east up the street from the hotel. This is remarkable given that the only new construction for years was a new beer depository on Degollado - the main road in from Cabo.

In the past two years over twenty-five retail locales have opened along Benito Juarez (the main boulevard in front of the hotel). On this street one can find Mexican arts, crafts, bookstores, restaurants, realtors and galleries to visit. Leather goods, 100% cotton dresses, shirts and pants, Mexican woven blankets, furnishings and carpets are among the many things to choose from. Surfers will appreciate the surfboards locally made by Alejandro at Azteca surf shop on Juarez.

Other tiendas sell silver jewelry, clay and ceramic pots including the famous Talavera pottery from mainland Mexico. This particular brand of pottery has been made in Puebla Mexico ever since the conquest in the early 1500’s. The Spanish king impressed with the Chinese blue and white ceramics arriving in Spain on Galleons from the orient, decreed that the Indians of Puebla were to start up a rival industry. Today the hand painted pots, bowls, and platters come in many colors and patterns ranging from Spanish and Italian flower, fruit and vegetable designs and arabesque patterns, to Aztec motifs.

Visit Curios el Datil owned by Rodolfo and Gregoria Lopontzi. They have unique decanters and wines such as a Jamaica liquor wine that is rich, slightly sweet, and unique to Mexico. Look for them on calle Hidalgo between Juarez and Militar. Ask for a sample and buy a bottle or few as they make great gifts. One can bring back two liters of alcoholic beverages duty free per person to the States.
