Huichol Art Store
Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, Mexico

This small well organized store is a mini museum to the art of the Huichol Indian Culture and deals only with Huichol art.

The Huichol Indigenous Culture, whose origins pre date the Hispanic arrival in Mexico, still survives in the remote Sierra Madre Mountain range. They live a life woven with magic and sacred mythology. They believe themselves to be part of creation and consider themselves sustained by the gods earthly representatives corn, peyote and the deer, through which they symbolically renew their divinity daily. The Huichol tribes people keep alive the ancient traditions relatively unaffected by Western civilization which is encroaching on their culture and habitat.

Most of Huichol art is formed from traditional shapes and figures covered with small glass beads in very intricate designs bases in their spirituality and mythology.

Celestial Things are based on divine cosmology and have very important meanings for the Huichol culture and the shapes and designs depict eclipses, the sun and moon.

The Masks are mirrors that reflect the patterns of face paintings worn during sacred ceremonies. The mirror reflects that which must be seen through in order to leave ones grand sense of self importance and enter the place of "original times" before the separation of the whole into its present forms.

Jaguars express a spiritual connection to nature in the form of this strong creature that inhabits a special place in nature.

Jicaras, ceremonial bowls, are made of gourds prized for light weight, durability, use as water vessels and storage containers. The bowls hold visions and creative inspiration gathered from a deeply spiritual culture celebrating life and life giving forces of the universe.

Merikas, yarn paintings, are personal interpretations of some aspect of the Huichol relationship to the Gods. These art pieces are creative manifestations embodying the belief that we all make our own realities.

The store also carries beautiful necklaces, bracelets, ear rings, bead covered eggs, Huichol dolls and shirts.

The store is open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm in the high season.
